Bahasa Melayu AEO, and why the English page is not enough

Bahasa Melayu AEO is the work of getting your brand named when a buyer asks an AI engine a question in Bahasa Melayu. It requires more than translating an English page.

What is Bahasa Melayu AEO?

Bahasa Melayu AEO is Answer Engine Optimisation for questions asked in Bahasa Melayu. The aim is for an AI answer to name the brand, describe it accurately and, where the engine shows sources, cite a page that supports the recommendation.

AEO and GEO describe almost the same work. AEO is the usual name when an answer quotes a page. GEO is the usual name when a model writes the answer. For a Malaysian brand, the result is the same: being present in the answer a buyer receives. The fuller definition is on AEO agency in Malaysia.

Why can English and Bahasa Melayu answers differ?

An English prompt and a Bahasa Melayu prompt express the same broad need in different words, but an AI engine does not treat them as one fixed search. It may retrieve different pages, interpret a phrase differently and assemble a different set of brands for each answer.

The available evidence differs too. A brand may have detailed English product pages but little Bahasa Melayu material that states who the product is for, where it is available or why someone should choose it. When the evidence changes, the answer can change with it.

This is why an English result cannot stand in for Malaysia as a whole. Mandarin Chinese should also be treated as a separate reading when buyers in the category ask in that language.

Why is a direct translation not enough?

A literal translation can preserve the English sentence while missing the question a Bahasa Melayu speaker would actually ask. The words used for a product, problem or comparison may differ, and Malaysian buyers may mix Bahasa Melayu and English terms in the same prompt.

Translate the intent, not just the copy. A page should sound natural, answer the full question and retain the facts that matter to the decision. Product names, prices, locations, availability and service terms must agree with the English page and the rest of the brand’s public information.

A translated headline above an English article is not a Bahasa Melayu resource. Neither is a page that repeats keywords but leaves the buyer without a clear answer.

What should a Bahasa Melayu answer page contain?

The page needs enough information for a buyer to make a comparison and for an engine to quote the answer without guessing. That usually means:

  • A direct answer: state who the product or service is for and name the brand in context.
  • Decision facts: include the features, locations, availability, price conditions or service terms that support the answer.
  • Natural Bahasa Melayu: use the wording a buyer recognises rather than a word-for-word translation.
  • Consistent claims: keep names, specifications and promises aligned with the English page and other brand profiles.
  • A clear page topic: answer one buyer need thoroughly instead of combining unrelated questions on one page.

The goal is not to make every page bilingual. It is to publish a useful Bahasa Melayu answer where the language changes how the buyer asks or evaluates the question.

Which Bahasa Melayu prompts should you track?

Start with questions tied to a decision: which company to choose, how two options compare, what suits a particular need, and where a product or service is available. Use questions heard by sales, support and retail teams rather than translating a list of English keywords in isolation.

Pair prompts by intent. For example, an English comparison question and its natural Bahasa Melayu equivalent belong together even when their sentence structures do not match. Keep mixed-language versions when buyers genuinely use them. This produces a useful prompt set rather than a translation exercise.

How should you measure Bahasa Melayu AI visibility?

Record the prompt, language, engine, date, brands named and sources cited. Run the same prompt more than once because AI answers can vary. Compare the result with its English equivalent, but do not merge the two into one score.

A useful report shows whether the brand is recommended, merely mentioned or absent. It also shows which competitor is named instead and whether a source supports the answer. That makes the reading actionable. One screenshot only shows what happened once.

The same method applies across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek and Grok. The measurement framework is covered in what an AI visibility agency in Malaysia should measure.
